Can Dernbach Really Challenge for a Test place?

Over the past three months Jade Dernbach has been able to establish himself as a talented England one-day and Twenty20 bowler. The 25-year-old fast bowler wants to push on now and try to establish himself as a frontrunner for the England Test side.

Does he have the skills and the mentality to be successful at the longer form of the game, or his style only suited to the shorter forms of the game?

Dernbach, another English cricketer born in South Africa, has been one of the finds of the year in one-day cricket. His variations have bamboozled batsmen, especially his trademark slow-ball, which is nearly impossible to spot until the very last second. Attempting to break into the Test team will be much harder because of the strength of this current England team.

Steve Finn became the youngest Englishman to reach 50 Test wickets and yet, he is unable to break into the team. Tim Bresnan has had success in his first seven Tests, taking 25 wickets at an average of 28 (and a batting average of 33). So Dernbach’s closest rivals have proven records at the highest level.

Dernbach has expressed his feelings on his ambitions; “Test cricket is the ultimate goal, definitely, because that’s the pinnacle. When my opportunities come I have to take them and see where it goes from there.”

This is good to hear England has hungry fast bowlers waiting in the wings, ready to impose themselves on the team.
